Preview: Lancaster City vs Warrington Town

Warrington Town are back on the road this Saturday as they make the trip to Lancaster City in the Northern Premier League.

The Yellows ended a disappointing February with a 2-1 victory over Hyde United at the Cal.Delivery Stadium last weekend, with goals from Troy Bourne and Elliot Morris securing their first victory in five league games.

This weekend, Paul Carden's men travel to the Giant Axe to face a Lancaster City side four points adrift of the playoffs. The two teams last met at the end of October, with the Yellows picking up a 3-2 victory over the Dolly Blues in WA4.

Below, we've compiled everything you need to know ahead of the fixture.

Team news

Striker Kallan Murphy will be available for selection ahead of this weekend's trip to Lancaster after serving a three-game suspension for a red card he incurred against Cleethorpes Town.

There were no fresh injury concerns for Paul Carden following Saturday's victory against Hyde United.

They may have been left behind in the race for a play-off place, but Paul Carden insists his Warrington Town side will not be “coasting” for what remains of their season.

Indeed, he says the primary motivation for him is rewarding the team’s fans for their patience during two tough seasons.

Town made it clear that their aim for the campaign was an immediate return to the National League North but having recovered from a slow start to position themselves for a play-off push, they hit the buffers at the wrong time.

While a 2-1 win over Hyde United on Saturday ended a five-match winless run, it appears to be too little, too late to break them back into the play-off picture.

They sit ninth and eight points adrift of the top five with eight games to go but Carden is hoping the weekend’s victory – a game which saw Elliot Morris strike a second-half winner after Troy Bourne’s early opener had been cancelled out – proves to be the catalyst for Yellows sending their supporters into the summer smiling.

“We’ve said all along that there’s always something to play for,” the Town boss said as he prepares to take his side to Lancaster City on Saturday.

“We’re certainly not going to be coasting because we want to win our games. You’ve got to have a pride in your performances and in your league position and we’ve got to show that.

“At Guiseley last week, we were abysmal but our fans who travelled actually clapped us off and were singing for us – that’s a massive encouragement.

“When performances haven’t been great, they’ve still been there so we’ve got to do everything we can for them.

“Last season was obviously disappointing and we had a really tough, slow start to this season. We got a bit of a head of steam up but then, we just seemed to fall off a cliff.

“Hopefully Saturday will be the start of us finishing the season as well as we can because the fans certainly deserve it. They deserve more weekends when they’re enjoying their pints rather than crying into them.”
